The European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn met representatives of the business community and civil society during a visit to Tirana on 23-24 March.

Commissioner Hahn stated that the granting of EU candidate status to Albania provided an incentive for the country, but that it must continue making progress towards membership. Albania is a solid and democratic country, Commissioner Hahn added, noting that it would benefit if stakeholders in the country commit to the highest European standards. Furthermore, he noted that reform in Albania must be inclusive if it is to be effective in fostering consensus among all stakeholders.

FIAA President Silvio Pedrazzi responded that while the will exists in Albania to develop a strong legal framework, implementation of the law is not always dependable. “There is a sort of uncertainty of the effectiveness of the rule of law which is very critical and the Albanian authorities should focus on the problems faced by some strategic sectors such as energy,” Mr Pedrazzi said.

Mr Pedrazzi also told Commissioner Hahn and the representatives of the business community and civil society who were present that investment potential in Albania is significant and that policymakers must prioritise co-operation with the business community and improvement of the business environment.
